Constitutional principles, quickly
What does "constitutional supremacy" mean?
The Constitution is the highest law of the land. Any law or conduct inconsistent with it is invalid, and the obligations it imposes must be fulfilled. Not even Parliament or the President stands above it.
Who can vote in South Africa?
Every citizen aged 18 or older who is registered on the voters' roll. The right to free, fair and regular elections is entrenched in Section 19 of the Bill of Rights.
What happens after the results are declared?
The National Assembly meets within 14 days of results being declared to elect the President. Provincial legislatures follow a similar process to elect Premiers.
Can election results be challenged?
Yes. Objections go to the Electoral Commission first, and disputes can be escalated to the Electoral Court, which has the status of a high court.
The country's conversation, in one place.
A moderated civic feed. Between elections, our editors curate significant political developments into the Dialogue so the conversation never loses the plot. Community rules apply: engage the idea, not the person.
Our ward went 11 days without a substation repair. Every party promised "energy security" last campaign. The promise tracker shows two of those pledges as stalled. When do words become work?
First-time voter here. The proportional representation module finally made coalitions make sense to me. More of this and fewer slogans, please. Tonight's debate stream, who's watching?

A direct question. A direct answer.
Formal referendums run with verified voter identity, one person one vote, an immutable audit trail, and independent observation. Civic (non-binding) referendums gauge national sentiment on major questions.
217 902 verified ballots cast · your vote is recorded
How our referendums stay trustworthy
Each ballot is tied to a verified identity but stored separately from the vote itself, so participation can be audited without exposing how anyone voted. Results are published with the full anonymised dataset.
Verified identity, secret ballot
Identity checks stop double voting. A cryptographic separation between the voter roll and the ballot box keeps every vote secret.
Civic vs statutory referendums
Civic referendums measure public sentiment and carry moral weight. Statutory referendums under national law would follow the formal legal framework and electoral authority oversight.
Audit trail
Every tally change is logged to an append-only record which independent observers can verify end to end.
Democracy doesn't sleep between polls.
Every ward by-election tracked: results, swings, turnout and what each contest signals about the national mood. Significant shifts are curated straight into the National Dialogue.
